After a four-year hiatus, Lorde is back with her new single, Solar Power, teasing her upcoming third studio album of the same title. By now, we know whenever Lorde releases new music, it will always be different than her previous releases. The difference between her debut album, Pure Heroine (2013), and her sophomore album, Melodrama (2017), are perfect examples of this, where she ditched her minimalist production style for a more electrifying pop sound.
Solar Power teases a more calm, laid-back, and summer-like feel. On my initial listen, I was very confused. I didn't know whether or not I liked it. It felt quite underwhelming, especially as a lead single. However, after listening to it many times in the last few days, I realized it was perfect as a lead single, purely because of its subject matter. With lyrics like, "Forget all of the tears that you've cried, it's over" and "It's a new state of mind," it seems like a perfect bridge between this new album and Melodrama, as Melodrama was an album about heartbreak.
My main issue with Solar Power is just its production. Lorde did a great job with the melody and the lyrics, but Solar Power doesn't feel like it has a climax. By the time you think it's going somewhere, it's about to end. In addition, they could have done more with the production in the bridge, where the song finally starts to pick up. I was never the biggest fan of her debut single, Royals, but Pure Heroine is one of my favorite albums of all time. I am hoping Solar Power will follow suit.
Green Light, from Melodrama, remains my favorite Lorde lead single, and though I enjoy Solar Power way more than Royals, I still feel Lorde has done and can do much better. Fortunately, Solar Power does grow on you the more you listen to it, but I don't think it's one of those songs that will become an earworm. Nevertheless, I know Lorde never disappoints with a full body of work, so I look forward to listening and reviewing her upcoming album.
