I'm Worried || Billie Eilish's New Album

Billie Eilish, 19, broke onto the scene with her debut single, Ocean Eyes. This led to the release of her debut EP, dontsmileatme, which catapulted her into the limelight. Two years later, her debut album, WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, was released. It was widely successful and critically acclaimed. Eilish swept the 2020 Grammy Awards, winning five Grammys in one night, including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for bad guy. In addition, she became the youngest person to ever win Album of the Year at the Grammys. Now, just a year later, a new era is upon us.

On March 17, 2021, Eilish posted a video on Instagram showing that she had ditched her black and green hair for blonde, indicating the start of a new era for her sophomore album, titled Happier Than Ever. Though excited to hear what the star has been cooking up for the last two years, I'm worried about how good the album will be.

Eilish has already released four singles: my future, Therefore I Am, Your Power, and Lost Cause. None of them have hooked onto me like some of her earlier work. The issue isn't her sudden shift in style, because I am all for artists changing their sound, especially since Eilish is so young. However, it feels like this album is leading up to be her weakest project to date.

My other issue is there doesn't seem to be any consistency. For most of the music videos from her debut album, there was a storyline, and if there wasn't, there was a specific aesthetic. When she released my future and Therefore I Am, I thought they were meant to be stand-alone singles. My suspicions seemed to be confirmed when Eilish's blonde hair era began, as in the music videos for my future and Therefore I Am, she had black and green hair.

Even though it has been two years since Eilish has released a full body of work, the Happier Than Ever era seems rushed. I understand that the pandemic might have changed her plans for the album's roll-out, but I still think her new era could have been thought out a lot better. It didn't even seem like my future and Therefore I Am were intended to be on the album, since stylistically, they're very different from her newest releases, Your Power and Lost Cause.

When it comes to Eilish's music, I've always said her songs sound better within her albums, so I am hopeful this will be the case for Happier Than Ever. The good news is Eilish has a strong fanbase, so whether or not the album matches up to dontsmileatme or WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?, it will undoubtedly do well.
